Seeing blue…

It may still look like winter outdoors but it’s definitely Spring indoors!

Earlier this year I wrote a blog about decorating trends for 2026.  One of the “in” trends on the list was the colour “blue”.  And I have to agree that “blue” is turning up everywhere from fashion to home decor.

Blue and white is hardly a new concept for Spring decorating.  (This reminds me of Miranda Priestly’s, “The Devil Wears Prada”, sarcastic comment, “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking”.)  When I was buying inventory for my store, blue and white was prominent for Spring/Summer, especially planters, ginger jars, tableware (chinoiserie), and table and bed linens.  Although I wanted it available for my customers, I’ve never had a blue decorating scheme in my own home even though I loved the look.  My home has had a gold/grey/black and creamy white colour palette for years…too long as it turns out.  I’m now officially on the “blue” bandwagon.  How I wish I had access to some of the items I bought for CC!

It all started when I replaced the carpet in the living room.  As you know, when you order online the colour on the screen often isn’t what it is in actuality.   As the delivery people unrolled the carpet, I was thrilled with the pattern and colour even though it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting.  The dominant colour was dark blue.  That’s when the decorating snowball began…

My present sofa is at least 20 years old and has held up well, a testament to the quality and classic styling.  It has two seat cushions and I was considering having it converted into a bench seat and the upholsterer was confident there would be enough fabric to make it work.  It’s charcoal grey velvet and it looks OK with the carpet but I decided to replace it with a dark blue velvet sofa.  Happily my grandson is excited about moving the old sofa into his man cave…hopefully it fits going down and around a narrow stairway!

I’ve had lots of inspiration from Pinterest and YouTube…this is what my mood boards would look like.

The new sofa will not arrive for another month or so but I’ve already started switching over accessories to complement a blue and white colour scheme.

Blue and white will be my Spring/Summer decor theme, but I’m already thinking about how to include blue into a Fall/Winter look. I’ll probably add gold to the mix which should offer a pleasing contrast since blue and yellow are both primary colours.

I think using blue in decor is a safe choice and doesn’t have to be considered a trend…blue and white has always been classic.

How have you been occupying your time while waiting for the gardening season to begin?

  1. Great minds do think alike Judy. I also had never used blue in my decor, but started buying a few pieces of blue and white chinoiserie last year, and I love it. I think the chinoiserie blends well with my neutral colors which I was starting to feel was a little dull. Can’t wait to see the final results of your living room Judy. A blue velvet couch sounds magnificent. Is the Rue Madam plate from Marin Montegut in Paris?

  2. Hi Karen, I was late to the blue and white theme and now I can’t understand why! I’m loving the change but now I have to rein it in or I’ll go overboard. Yes, the Rue Madame plate is from Marin Montegut. I was in the shop this past summer and could have bought so much more…travelling with carry on does have its drawbacks. You can buy it online though. xox Judy❤️

  3. Hi Judy! You don’t have to convince me … says the lady that lives in a house with blue siding! 😂

  4. Not at all Judy. I’ve always loved blue. It’s my go to. I have to hold back and not overdo it. I need other colours to help with the balance I’ve found lots of inspiration from your ideas. So keep them happening.

I also miss coming into your shop to see what’s new and pick up some treasures. Oh the memories.

    1. Hi again, I certainly can see the temptation to overdo it with blue because it’s so pleasing. I look forward to adding to the mix, trying new combinations of colour for different seasons…I may be calling on you for inspiration! xox Judy❤️

  5. Hi Judy, your carpet is stunning!!! I love the colour and the pattern and I also love all the pieces you’ve accessorized with. I’ve thought of ordering carpet online and was worried about what it would look like on arrival. You’ve given me new hope because yours is gorgeous! My laundry room is painted in a colour that is somewhere between the pale blue and the flax flower blue on the palette and it makes me so happy every time I walk in there….which is, needless to say, constantly. Welcome to the “blues club” 😂 and thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous decor with us and I can’t wait to see your new sofa!

    1. Hi Karen, I certainly understand your apprehension about ordering a carpet online because there is at least a 50% chance it’s not going to be what you hoped for. If you are ordering from a source that does seamless returns then the risk is fairly low but often there is a long lead time to getting your product and that can be disappointing especially if it’s the starting point of a decorating project. I’m happy to have joined the “blues club” and can foresee being a happy member for sometime! xox Judy❤️
