Are we there yet…

I don’t think so.  And judging by the amount of snow I have in my garden, I will not be seeing green (like this beautiful garden) for some time.

I’m one of those strange people who likes winter, and can honestly say summer is my least favourite season.  I’m much happier at -30C than +30C.  Having said that…I’m now over winter!!!  And where is Spring?

Like many of you, I’m past the daydreaming and planning season (Winter) and eager to get my hands dirty.  I’ve spent a good amount of time on my computer scrolling through Pinterest and watching gardening YouTube videos.  Seeing the images that cross the screen are so appealing, it only makes me more anxious to get going on a new season.

I have to remind myself to be grateful for the snow that has hopefully protected the garden from harsh winds and frigid temperatures and possibly provided much needed moisture.  Judging by the evergreens in my back garden, the needles are looking healthy and green…not scary brown as in recent years.  A good sign, so far.  Taking the burlap off the boxwood hedges will be the real test.

Are you like me…when you visualize your garden (in the daydreaming, planning season) it’s much bigger than in reality?  I get excited about planting new shrubs and perennials which in truth, will probably not work.  I have a city garden…not an estate!  I’m already talking to myself saying, “don’t get carried away on those first few trips to the garden centre”.  Easier said than done.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day and in just a few days, the first day of Spring.  We can see the signs of Spring with the longer daylight hours, even with the cool temperatures the sun feels warm, the squirrels are so busy, and the geese are honking overhead. Nature has her own clock and we have to believe that she knows best.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all my Irish friends.

Soon, (if you’re one of the lucky ones with a clothesline) the heavy quilts can be air dried and be put away for another winter.

Are you patiently awaiting?

  1. Thank you for another lovely post! I wouldn’t put patient and waiting together in a description of how I’ve been feeling – ha! I have found this winter very trying mainly due to the icy conditions and resulting difficulty in getting out to walk. I am glad about more snow cover though – for our plants and hopefully the forest areas. Happy St Patrick’s Day!

    1. Thank you Cathy, I agree with you about the icy conditions…I had my car rear ended on one of those icy days, and walking is risky business! Hopefully soon it will be a distant memory. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, xox Judy☘️

      1. Oh I do hope you weren’t injured! I agree – soon the ice should be just a memory…

  2. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Judy …..I am also anxious for the snow to melt and feel the warmth of the sun! As you know I plant in containers and many do not survive the winters, which takes me to the Garden Centre every year and of course I leave with many more than planned!
I cannot wait to see your garden plans for this year, you always inspire!

    1. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Catherine, it’s always disheartening when plants don’t survive the winter but thankfully the greenhouses are gloriously abundant with temptation! xox Judy☘️

  3. Happy St. Patrick Day Judy. My exact sentiments about the LONG winter, and the ice. I too am so anxious to get out in the yard, get my pots and containers out of storage, and in place. Then the multiple trips to the greenhouses to find what looks beautiful to fill them with. I look forward to a post on what might be new and trending for this coming gardening season. Like everyone I’m sure, I have my favorite flower/plants, but I try to pick up something different every season, just to change it up a bit. Enjoy the sunshine today!

    1. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Karen, It’s always a treat to see what new varieties of plants and flowers the greenhouses bring in. I’m curious too about what the trend will be this year…my guess would be a hybrid English Country Garden…we’ll see. xox Judy☘️

  4. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Judy and I hope you’re ok after your car accident 😰! I’m anxious to see if the bulbs I planted in fall come up this spring…2 types of Allium (Summer Drummer and Nectaroscordum). I’m having another veggie box built so it will be full steam ahead with the planting once the last frost comes and goes. I’m also anxious to get out to the garden centres to explore and find new things to include in my garden. Until then I’ll try to be patient as well😂. Hugs, Karen xo❤️

    1. Happy Belated St. Patrick’s Day Karen, I was not injured in the car accident but my car, unfortunately did…it’s fixable so all is good. Soon the bulbs will be poking their heads out to the sun and Alliums in particular put on quite a show and have lasting power. It sounds like the garden centres are going to be busy as we are all anxious to get gardening! xox☘️
