Mood Boards…

When I was a decorator in a past life, I would have my clients go through magazines and without putting too much thought into what they were looking for, randomingly tear out pages that showed something that resonated with them.  It could be a colour, a pattern, a style of furniture, anything really.  After, we would go through the images and most often there would be a common thread or theme.  We  then had a starting point.

That was a time long before computers!  Now with Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, and other social media platforms so easily accessible, finding inspiration it usually a click away.  Although I’m a firm believer in shopping locally, sometimes that isn’t an option and the internet offers a world of options to purchase online.  Creating a mood board has become relatively simple.

The photo above is the interior of “Le Grand Colbert” in Paris.  Many of you will recognize this bistro from the movie “Somethings Gotta Give”.  I have dined here on several occasions, sitting at the movie table, of course,  and have loved the ambience.  It has everything you might imagine of a Paris cafe/restaurant…soft lighting, bustling waiters, good food (the chicken that Erica, Diane Keaton, recommends really is a hit), plants (mostly palms), and exquisite polished mosiac tiled floors.  This is my inspiration.

 

Presently my “Happy Hour” room looks nothing like the warm glow of “Le Grand Colbert”.  Because I’m thinking this will be an “end of the working day” room, I want this space to have that after dark, Paris bistro vibe…hence the mood board I’ve been working on.

First, it will need a good name…  Next I want patio string lights and a simple chandelier with edison light bulbs to provide that warm glow.  The floor, which is just the existing cement patio, will be painted in a mosiac tile pattern.  There will be a bar and bistro style seating.

This is how my mood board is coming along.

 

I have a starting point and hopefully I’ll stay focused and not get too distracted by everything else that’s on the market!

  1. Everything you do turns out so beautifully, Judy, and I can’t wait to see how your “Happy Hour” room turns out. With your amazing sense of style, I know it’ll look absolutely gorgeous…honestly, is there anything you can’t do? I’m going to continue working on the flower garden in the backyard around the new pergola, which has become our little oasis and feels like an extension of the house….of course, more so in the summer😂. I have a little marble-topped bistro table just like the one you have pictured (purchased at Wellington many years ago) and taking the covers off of it and the tying the cushions on the chairs always signals the arrival of summer for me.     1. Hi Karen, I would love to see a photo of your pergola and the flower garden you are creating. You had mentioned in an earlier comment that you were having a “Staycation” again this year. If we ‘ve learned anything over these last few years, it’s that our homes and gardens are our “safe” place. When we create environments that bring comfort and beauty to our homes, travelling to escape our daily grind isn’t so important. xox Judy❤️

I’ll wait until the summer when I’ve set up the flower garden as well as my many pots of lavender etc… You’re so right about our homes being our “safe” place. It’s like our own little oasis out there. This summer I’m determined to spend a bit more time relaxing under the pergola and enjoying the garden instead of slaving away in it while Cooper lounges on the garden furniture watching me😂.   2. Judy, the project looks wonderful. We can always be customers there at your “Happy Hour” room. We also dined at “Le Grand Colbert” and enjoyed the food, the decor and the atmoshere. Have fun with your project!

  7. My project, is to pack and get out of here to Victoria. I did acquire some new art that you might be interested to see. Sometime in the next few months we will have tea up here and you can view the pieces.

  9. How I dream of taking a “Happy Hour”, to have a space for it is also something to look forward to. We always enjoy this on a vacation, but I never have managed to keep it up once home and back into work mode. I can’t wait to see the moody happy hour space you plan to create. This would definitely be a place I would find on vacation! You have so many wonderful ideas, thank you for sharing and inspiring.
