2026 Trends

As I mentioned in my Christmas decorating blog, I don’t follow trends to the letter, but now that all the holiday decorations have been packed up for another year, I’m curious about what’s coming for 2026 in home decor.  Maybe I’ll find something new to keep my home looking timeless…not too locked into a particular style or an easily identifiable look.

What I’ve heard so far doesn’t bode well for my home!  All white kitchens are out…mine has white cabinets, carrara marble countertops and white subway tile backsplash.  Paint colours on the horizon are warm toned or bold…brown, terracotta, peachy.  Neutral interiors are out…are they ever truly out?  My walls are white, light grey or muddy grey.  On the plus side (for me), it appears that open concept interiors are not as popular.  My house is older and when we renovated we didn’t take down too many walls, therefore, it never had an open concept.  Are separate rooms “in” again?

Does this mean I’ll be doing a clean sweep of the past and planning a whole redo?  No.

Although the eye tends to veer towards the new, common sense usually prevails.  I won’t be repainting my house dark brown, but I could do a refresh of my dining room and I’ll consider moving away from grey, but what colour…I’m not sure.  And I plan on wallpapering the powder room and I’m considering this pattern (photo left).

Several months ago, I ordered an area rug, new dining chairs and a couple of swivel club chairs for the living room.  (The club chairs will sit in front of the bookcase.)  So far only the rug has arrived.  The pattern and colour are slightly bolder than the old one and it’s larger.  Ordering online is risky because the colour on the computer screen is usually off, however, I was more than pleasantly surprised when it was rolled out.  It works perfectly with the sofa and the background colour of the rug is almost exactly the same as the Bibliothegue.

These are fabric swatches for the dining chairs (lighter one) and the swivel chairs (camel velvet). Thankfully they work with the rug too!

Previously I had a sofa in front of the Bibliotheque.  Although I liked it, my family complained about it being uncomfortable, and in fairness it’s a bit uptight for anyone who wants to stretch out to watch TV or have a nap…of which I do neither!  My plan was to move that sofa into the bar (on the patio) but with the snow piled high up against its doorway, I thought I would just keep it in the dining room until Spring.  As it turns out, I really like it in the dining room!  I’ve put it behind the dining table and it looks like a banquette.  It will provide an extra seat or two at the table as well.

The trend towards personalizing your home continues into 2026.  Somehow I don’t see this trend going away.  Since the pandemic, we’ve realized how important are homes are and spending more time at home has encouraged us to create cozy retreats to suit our individual lifestyles.  Some other things you will see in the new year are:

  • outdoor influences coming indoors
  • the colour “Blue”
  • monogramming and embroidery
  • florals and lace trim
  • pattern on pattern
  • silver metals
  • wellness rooms

Are you planning to refresh your interiors this year?

PS  I’m posting this blog today, not Thursday.  When I started to draft this post this morning, the program and set up was completely different.  What happened over the holidays…I do not know!!!  However, somehow after clicking a bunch of keys, I was able to find something that looked somewhat familiar.   Now I’m afraid to sign out in case I couldn’t get back here!  That means the set up, grammar, spelling may be off…sorry.

  1. Hi Judy! Great color match on the chairs to the carpet, and I do like the pattern on the carpet. Personally, I’m sticking with my existing colors, because I can’t even get that to work out well – hahaha. Brown walls? No thanks. Like you, I’ll stick with the neutrals. I really like the art that you hung on the Bistro board, in your dinning room. Happy New Year Judy!

    1. Happy New Year Karen, I wonder too how many people will be painting their walls brown. The print on the Bistro board has been popular with everyone…I got at Home and Cottages. xox Judy❤️

      1. I must re-visit Home and Cottages again soon. I just order some prints from Lake and London. Her store is in Ontario. Very few if any prints left after the Boxing Day sale, but she does have some nice things, and likely will re-fresh for Spring very soon. Worth checking out if you haven’t heard of her. Thank you for the reminder about Home and Cottages.

  2. Happy New Year Judy! I also read an article (maybe it was the same article😂) about “what’s in and what’s out” for 2026 and I laughed as I read it because I swear some of these designers feel as if they’re obligated to make these lists in order to be seen as having great design “know-how”. I, for one, will also not be painting my walls dark brown and when I finally get my kitchen renovated (some day!) it will be in the off-whites and neutrals which make me feel calm and happy, not something to fulfill a trend. The classics never go out of style! I LOVE your style and your design choices whether it’s the patterns, colours, fabrics or styles you choose! Do whatever makes you happy since you’re the one who is living there …not the person (who will change their mind again for 2027 anyways😂) writing those articles. Your rug is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see the club chairs when they arrive. Big hugs, Karen xo❤️

    1. Thank you Karen, you are always so generous in your comments. I hope that your kitchen reno is coming in 2026. I, too, would always choose a white kitchen…no matter what the trend! xox Judy❤️
