I don’t think I’ve checked the weather app on my phone as often as I have this past week. Is there a freezing temperature in the near future or are we in the clear? If I wasn’t a skeptic I’d look to Nature instead for clues…
My garden is revealing itself in an interesting way this Spring. The peonies, which are usually the first to celebrate the new season, are slow, but the leaves on most of the trees have already opened and some of the early tulips (photo taken on May 5) are already fading, while others are about to explode. The apple trees are blossoming and the perennials and roses seem to be growing before my eyes. With the exception of the peonies, which are well on their way now, everything seems earlier this Spring.
The garden centres are brimming and it’s impossible to “just look” at the offerings. As long as there’s an available cart, I’m all in like a child at Christmas. There is always room for more!
I’ve planted up most of my containers already, knowing full well that it’s a couple of weeks earlier than what’s considered the last frost date (around May long weekend) in my zone. Even the herbs have been sitting out overnight for the past week and so far so good. I’m not completely confident this was wise but according to the 14 day weather projection there is no frost…fingers crossed.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I mixed herbs, vegetables, annuals and perennials all together. The colour scheme is white, green and lavender. I haven’t sprinkled lettuce and radish seeds in the shade containers yet but will do so probably this weekend.

Have you been as eager or tempted to get started? This weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day…maybe you will be gifted some beautiful additions for your garden.

Most of us have been lucky to have had loving mothers, and many have children of our own. Where would the world be without Mothers to guide and nurture the next generation to be kind, respectful, productive human beings?
My mom was a strong, no nonsense women who encouraged us to solve our own problems. There were lots of laughs but also an expectation to help out with chores, just because…not to get paid. We were well cared for and felt safe and secure.
Each generation has their own style of parenting but in the end, the objective is the same. We all want our children to be happy and healthy so they may realize their dreams and aspirations.
I wish all the mothers a special day with those they hold dear.

PS This will be my sign off for the summer. I will look forward to hearing about your garden projects and/or your travels. See you in September. xox

Darn – I was hoping to live vicariously through you this summer Judy, to see your yard explode into beauty. Because of my trip in three weeks, I will not be planting anything until mid-June, and who knows what will be left in the garden centers by then. Please leave a few beautiful plants for me lol.
A Happy Mother’s day to you as well Judy, and happy gardening! I will be looking forward to seeing your beautiful garden pictures in September.
