Every April, around the middle of the month, I take a deep breath and remove the burlap protection from the boxwood hedges. After the disastrous unveiling last year and realizing almost immediately that most of the hedge didn’t survive, I was nervous to see what lay beneath the burlap. To my delight, all looks great…I’m cautiously optimistic.
The weather conditions this past winter were much less severe than the winter of 2023-24. The snow cover lasted the full season, insulating plants below from drying, harsh winds and extreme temperature fluctuations.

The hedges in the back look good, too. Although it’s still possible that I may lose a few boxwood plants, I’m thrilled with how green, soft, and lush they look and feel.

Every day, the garden reveals new, lovely surprises. The herebores are more beautiful than ever before (possibly because they are more established)…I haven’t even had to groom back any dead leaves. I believe this, too, is due to ample snow cover.
The tulips and alliums are all popping up almost miraculously, just days after the snow melted. Little violas are blooming, and many other perennials are greening up, showing promise for the season ahead.
Even when the winds are howling, like yesterday, we should never doubt that nature is always hard at work. Having faith is what we (I) sometimes lack…

P.S. The Rose House is open at Greenland Garden Centre and loaded with so many beautiful varieties…tempting to buy one of each.

Hooray for a a successful reveal!
Thank you Donna, I hope your garden is perking up as well. Happy Easter weekend. Hope the Easter bunny finds his way to your front door. xox Judy❤️
👌You’re off to an amazing start Judy! 😊 Lovely quotes.
Hi Karen, it’s such a relief…I hope it’s not premature. I’m sure you have been wondering around your garden too, marvelling at what survives a long winter. Happy Easter and I see lots of chocolate in your future. Enjoy xox Judy❤️
Your boxwoods look fantastic Judy…so green and lush! I can’t believe how many flowers you have popping up already…the only thing I have popping through is rhubarb. None of my flowers are coming up yet…I guess I’ll have to be patient and see what happens over the next week or so. I’m so happy for you especially after a disappointing start last spring. Enjoy these warm spring days in your garden and have a Happy Easter! Hugs, Karen xo🥰
Hi Karen, For far, so good on the boxwood. It looks like I may have lost only one in the back. I’m amazed at how many perennials are up. I have quite a few that stay green throughout the winter. I am surprised that the peonies seem to be slow…usually they are the first to poke their heads through the ground. Happy Easter to your family and hope there is lots of chocolate to go around! xox Judy❤️
