As the winds blow and temperatures drop, it’s a relief to know that all (or most) garden cleanup chores are done for the season. I never seem to get as much done as I’d like, but sometimes you must say, “This has to be enough.”
Safeguarding the boxwood hedges occupied most of my concerns this fall. Determined to avoid another disaster next spring, I doubled the protection in the front parterres.

In past years, I’ve protected the boxwood with burlap, but this fall, I added (with Jamie’s help) an extra layer along the perimeter with a short wire fence set 6″ away from the hedge also wrapped with burlap. Hopefully, this will be sufficient protection against the harsh northwest wind and the sun’s reflection from the snow, which can burn exposed boxwood.
The boxwood hedges in the back garden are all tucked in too.

We can never know what Nature has in store, but fingers crossed this will be enough to keep the boxwood safe!

Nice job wrapping up the boxwoods Judy! Looks so pretty still🍂🍁fingers crossed🤞
Thank you Catherine, now we wait and hope for the best! Happy Halloween, xox Judy❤️
That’s a lot of work, and even with the covers your garden looks attractive!!
Thank you Yolanta, Yes it does take quite a bit of time to get everything done and yet I still hope it is enough! Happy Halloween, xox Judy❤️
Wow! Looks like your babies are all wrapped up for their winter nap, with the burlap to protect them from the freeze thaw. Even wrapped they look wonderful with a promise for the spring awakening. I hope I come out the other end at spring looking so good LOL 😂
Hi Monique, Here’s hoping that there is a “wonderful” surprise come spring. Fingers crossed your boxwood is sleeping well this winter too! …and you always look fabulous, rain or shine. xox Judy❤️
Oh my gosh Judy, what a wonderful job you’ve done getting things prepped for winter! I hope your boxwoods have a nice winter nap and come out doing well in the spring. Could you please tell me what those gorgeous flowering plants or shrubs are on the right hand side of the bottom right photo? Your garden looks stunning and this photo makes me want to walk down the path and see what’s around the corner…beautiful! Enjoy these lovely days of fall🍁. Hugs, Karen xo❤️
Thank you Karen, now we wait to see what spring brings. That is hydrangea growing along the east side of the garage. Last year I started limbing them up so that they are taking on a tree form. It also allows for underplanting more perennials. Happy Halloween, xox Judy❤️
Thank you so much Judy and what a wonderful idea! I’ve never heard or thought of doing that with hydrangea. They look so lush and healthy! Hope you had a Happy Halloween too. Hugs, Karen xo❤️
Hi Karen, I also like the way the hydrangea looks when pruned up. I saw it done that way in a friend’s garden several years ago and promptly went home and got the pruners out! xox Judy❤️
I’ll have my fingers and toes crossed for you and all the fellow gardeners. I too look out my window, and see where a little more work could be done. But I agree, “This has to be enough.” Now I look forward to and enjoy the Winter/Holiday Season.
Best. ❤️
Karen
Thank you Karen for keeping all us gardeners in your positive thoughts. Before long the snow will be flying and Christmas carols will be playing in all the malls putting everyone in the mood to celebrate the season…is your tree up yet? Happy Halloween, xox Judy❤️
My tree is not up yet Judy, but it will be very soon. I’m looking forward to seeing Greenland’s Lights in the Park event as soon as the snow flies.❤️
Hi Karen, as I look out my window this morning I’m thinking Karen may be setting her tree up today…it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas!!! xox Judy❤️
