Coastal Style…

 

 

 

 

*** As I write this post, Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do” is playing on repeat in my head!

 

 

After a long winter, a walk on the beach is a shock to the senses. The thunder of the clapping waves, the smell of the ocean, the sand underfoot, the birds—oh my, the birds, the sun warming exposed skin, and the taste of salty air…I’m in paradise!

Being immersed in this environment makes you want to fill your home with seashells, linen, wicker, and everything blue and white—the exact opposite of what my home interior looks like! I know I won’t change the nest I’ve spent years putting together, but it’s a treat to live that fantasy for just a few days.

Coastal style, not to be confused with Nautical or Beach style, is elegant, tailored, uncluttered at the same time, casual. The decor is light and airy, reflecting the colours of the sea, blue skies, and sand, as do the textures. Billowing sheers, linen, jute, and rattan prevail. Rich navy, crisp whites, and every shade of blue and white in between.

I’m in Santa Monica, staying at “Shutters on the Beach” this week. Close to the Santa Monica Pier on miles of sandy beach, this truly is a special place. The exterior is a bright white wooden structure with breathtaking interiors.

 

You are greeted by a sprawling lobby with numerous cozy seating areas for meeting others or just relaxing, a fireplace that’s always on, inviting spots for drinks or meals throughout and, of course, the view…a beach that never seems to end and the ocean for miles ahead.

Our room is decorated in blue, white and green with dark wood floors. White shutters cover the windows, and the ceiling is painted the softest powdery blue. The entertainment unit has books, blue and white ginger jars, shells, and interesting knick-knacks decorated like a private residence. A copy of Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” is casually placed on the desk as if someone has just left to go for a walk.

Just outside our door is an intimate courtyard. The trees and shrubs are lush, and the flowers are starting to bloom.

1 Pico, a restaurant in the hotel, was the film location for Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves’s first date in the movie Something’s Gotta Give. We had dinner here our first night.

This hotel has mastered the “Coastal Style.” Every detail is fine-tuned, giving a vibe of elegance and comfort throughout. Even the dog guests are well-behaved and hop on the white slip-covered sofas as if they are in their own living room!

 

 

 

 

As the sun sets and our fabulous mini break comes to an end,  I’m rejuvenated and inspired to get back in the garden. I’m ready to feel the sun’s healing powers on my back and get my hands dirty. It’s always a little sad to leave paradise behind, but I know there will be many more sunsets over the beach in the future.

 

 

 

 

 

This tablescape is in keeping with Coastal Style. With that hint of Spring, we have all been waiting for it.
