Small things…

amuse small minds.  And this truly is a small thing!

I must be bored, stuck in “February”, the short month that seems to last forever!

This is the small thing I’m talking about.  It may be difficult to visualize where this is in my house, but I’ll try to clarify.  My house is a split level.  In the photo (left), the kitchen is on the left of the iron railing, and the dining room and passageway to the back garden are down three steps (right of the railing in the photo).  As you can see, I have floral print drapes in the kitchen and gold velvet drapes in the dining room.  Although the floral print has a bit of gold in the pattern, it’s a bit of a stretch, but  I chose this print to go with the raspberry velvet banquette I have in the kitchen.

My problem, and this isn’t anything that a normal person might ponder over, is how to “bridge” that gap.  I have thought of putting a small mirror there, but I knew that wouldn’t really tie the two areas together…

When I was cleaning and rearranging after the Christmas clean-up, I noticed that the banquettes in the Leroy Neiman print (Grand Vefour Restaurant in Paris), which I have propped up on a buffet in the dining room, are the same colour as my banquette, as well as the print of Sarah Bernhardt, “The Divine Sarah” by Georges Clairin, that I have in my powder room also has the same raspberry colour on her chaise.  As I was dusting away, a thought crossed my mind (fleetingly) that it was too bad I couldn’t move these prints into my kitchen to complement what I had going on in there…I just don’t have the wall space.  But as I sit on my banquette, looking out my window and pondering Spring, that small, blank space I see out of the corner of my eye has been bugging me…more and more.

To make this small story short, I have been looking for a picture, print, sketch (whatever) to put in the space.  Unsuccessful of finding anything, I started pouring through my decorating books, hoping to find inspiration.  After umpteen hours, I came across a photo of Spring blossoms in the book, “Paris in Bloom”. It had a grey background, pink blooms and, bonus, a black iron fence with gold painted finials. It is small, so it would fit the space, and it tied everything together.  And I had this gold metal frame on hand that suited it perfectly.  I will take it to a professional framer, though.  The back only has an easel hinge, so I’ll need a wire hanger attached, and I also want it matted.

As you can see I haven’t too much to write about this month!  I hope you are keeping yourselves busy and maybe finding pleasure in the small things in life too.
