Every April, around the middle of the month, I take a deep breath and remove the burlap protection from the boxwood hedges. After the disastrous unveiling last year and realizing almost immediately that most of the hedge didn’t survive, I was nervous to see what lay beneath the burlap. To my delight, all looks great…I’m cautiously optimistic.
The weather conditions this past winter were much less severe than the winter of 2023-24. The snow cover lasted the full season, insulating plants below from drying, harsh winds and extreme temperature fluctuations.
The hedges in the back look good, too. Although it’s still possible that I may lose a few boxwood plants, I’m thrilled with how green, soft, and lush they look and feel.
Every day, the garden reveals new, lovely surprises. The herebores are more beautiful than ever before (possibly because they are more established)…I haven’t even had to groom back any dead leaves. I believe this, too, is due to ample snow cover.
The tulips and alliums are all popping up almost miraculously, just days after the snow melted. Little violas are blooming, and many other perennials are greening up, showing promise for the season ahead.
Even when the winds are howling, like yesterday, we should never doubt that nature is always hard at work. Having faith is what we (I) sometimes lack…

P.S. The Rose House is open at Greenland Garden Centre and loaded with so many beautiful varieties…tempting to buy one of each.
