Fingers crossed…

As the winds blow and temperatures drop, it’s a relief to know that all (or most) garden cleanup chores are done for the season. I never seem to get as much done as I’d like, but sometimes you must say, “This has to be enough.”

Safeguarding the boxwood hedges occupied most of my concerns this fall. Determined to avoid another disaster next spring, I doubled the protection in the front parterres.

In past years, I’ve protected the boxwood with burlap, but this fall, I added (with Jamie’s help) an extra layer along the perimeter with a short wire fence set 6″ away from the hedge also wrapped with burlap. Hopefully, this will be sufficient protection against the harsh northwest wind and the sun’s reflection from the snow, which can burn exposed boxwood.

The boxwood hedges in the back garden are all tucked in too.

We can never know what Nature has in store, but fingers crossed this will be enough to keep the boxwood safe!
