Love Letters…

Have you ever received a love letter? Lucky you if you have…I haven’t. Yes, I’ve been given fabulous gifts and heart-warming cards, but never a love letter. In fairness, perhaps I’m part of a different generation than when this custom was popular. Love letters have been exchanged for centuries, but it’s an art that’s dying with the convenience of modern technology. What a shame.

Even today, if I find a handwritten envelope in the mailbox, there is much anticipation about its contents. I remember how excited I was to receive the distinctive blue airmail letters from my pen pal who lived in Scotland. We corresponded throughout my junior and high school years, and I often lament that we didn’t continue into our adulthood. We wrote of our teenage angst…it seemed so important at the time like we were the only ones who understood what was really going on.

In the last couple of weeks before Valentine’s Day, network TV and streaming services have filled the airways with popular romcoms from the past and current love stories. If you’re a romantic and haven’t seen “The Last Letter From Your Lover”, I highly recommend it. It opens with the Hemingway quote below that sets the tone perfectly!

The movie is adapted from a book by JoJo Moyes. I haven’t read the book, but from experience, I’ve found the book is usually better than the screenplay.

This movie has everything I love. It takes place in the 1960s, along with a brewing love story running parallel in the current time. It’s located in London and the south of France. The fashion is sensational, Jackie Kennedy inspired, the soundtrack is fabulous (Nancy Sinatra, Marianne Faithful, Aretha Franklin), and most importantly, the love letters are captivating.

High praise indeed!
