Coastal Grandmother Style…

The good news about the latest lifestyle trend, “The Coastal Grandmother“, as coined by Tik Tok influencer, Lex Nicoletta (age 26), is that you don’t actually have to be a grandmother.  It’s easy, breezy, and inspired by Nancy Meyer’s movies, “Something’s Gotta Give” and “It’s Complicated“.

The wardrobe of those following this trend consists of linen and cashmere, relaxed button-up shirts, turtleneck sweaters, straw or bucket hats, white sneakers and rattan bags.

Perhaps the most identifiable look of this trend is the sophisticated layering in home decor.  The beachy vibe of these cozy interiors includes slipcovered sofas, soft throws, and sisal rugs.  Blue and white ginger jars are a must as are vases of fresh-cut flowers in every room.  The delicate scent of candles wafts throughout…imagine Diptyque.  Those of us who saw, “Something’s Gotta Give” will remember gushing over the living room of Diane Keaton’s Hamptons beach house.

Cooking and entertaining are effortless in white kitchens…Ina Garten style.

Gardening is a favourite pastime…front gardens are perfectly manicured and a potager (kitchen garden) is steps from the kitchen door.  I remember envying Meryl Streep’s garden in “It’s Complicated“.  Her home was on the opposite coast in Santa Barbara.

A carefully edited playlist completes the trend.  The soundtracks from both of these movies are great…we played the CD of “Something’s Gotta Give” on repeat (day after day) in the store.   If you are making your own playlist you may want to include Etta James, Nora Jones, The Beach Boys, Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, etc….(OK is this sounding like something a grandmother would enjoy!).

Add a cute little dog, a glass of white wine and a romance novel to the mix and you’ve created a perfect summer lifestyle for yourself.

The association of grandmothers as stylish and trendy is flattering…speaking as a grandmother myself.  Are you onboard?
