Mother Nature has waved her magic wand and abracadabra…what was brown is suddenly green! With just a few days of sun and a bit of rain, the landscape has transformed before our eyes.
I’m always relieved to see signs of life on the trees, shrubs and bulbs at this time of year. It was just last week that the ice melted, and I was able to lift the burlap off the boxwood hedges. Thankfully the hedges look great, almost blindingly neon in contrast with the rest of the garden.
Overnight the alliums and tulips are poking their heads out to reach the sun. Planting bulbs in the fall is one of my least favourite projects…it’s usually cold and windy, or worse… wet, cold and windy, and my hands are frozen by the time I’m done. But it’s so rewarding to see that my efforts have been fruitful!
The always reliable lilacs and willow, and an “unknown” shrub that is always the first to show…
and Cotoneaster hedge and peonies…
The apple trees are starting to leaf out too. Last year’s apple harvest was disappointing. In Spring 2021, the apple trees fully blossomed by early May. Unfortunately, I believe the harsh cold front and snow on May 18 may have stunted the apple production. Fingers crossed that we have seen the last of snow until the fall!
Now I’ll hold my breath waiting to see if the tea roses survived the cold and wind.
At this time of year, gardeners are so anxious to start implementing the plans made over winter. As the saying goes, “patience is a virtue” however, I suspect many of us don’t have that kind of patience! As I scroll through my past photos and garden journal, it appears that my garden is a week or so behind last year…maybe, with luck, it will last a week longer at the end of the season.

Hi Joyce, Painting the door has taken longer, because of the weather, than I could have imagined! The colour is so different than when the door was black that it has taken some getting used to! I’m happy to have some of these projects out of the way so that the garden can take centre stage. I’m sure you are busy in your garden every spare minute you have. xox Judy❤️

The rain this morning is welcome, but with so much to do in the garden it’s hard to appreciate nature’s gift! The lavender door is a beautiful, subtle pop of color. Lovely choice. How ingenious to add the matching stool to the banquette. Love it! It’s so exciting to be outside in our yards again, and watching things come back to life.
