For Moms…

Mothering, and childhood has changed considerably throughout the generations.  Years ago large families and poverty often went hand in hand with daily survival being the main objective. Pampering children wasn’t an option.  Modern times have given mothers and their children more opportunity to build that precious bond with the help of extended families (“it takes a village”),  education,  advancements in healthcare, and increased life expectancy.  Finding the delicate balance between home, family and career/work is always tricky and almost impossible to achieve.

Several years ago I read the touching story (left) about Thomas Edison and how his mom sheltered him from the knowledge that his teachers determined he was not capable of learning within their school system. He was asked to leave.  She taught him at home and with her encouragement he became one of the most influential inventors of our time.

This week the United Kingdom celebrates the arrival of another royal … Archie Harrison, a son for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.  Watching Meghan over the past nine months, we’ve had a glimpse into her happiness and anticipation about becoming a first-time mother. Being a royal brings a special privilege, however, I have no doubt that the Duchess will be a hands-on mom, protecting her son from an often vicious media circus and giving him every opportunity to become his own person … the best he can be.

Screen Shot 2019-05-06 at 2.46.01 PMBeing a mom isn’t easy.  There are many books on parenting, but does this advice only work in theory?  The reality is that every day brings a new challenge for mothers, whether it be physical, emotional, financial,  etc. and the true picture isn’t always textbook perfect.  We, as mothers,  just try to do the best we can.  The hardest part of being a mom is knowing when to let go.  Teaching our children to be independent is doable…letting them go isn’t…

This weekend I, along with my siblings (and their significant others), will celebrate Mother’s Day with my mom whose birthday also coincides with this occasion.  The other special mom in my life is my daughter, who is the best mom I know.
